Hillsborough County Local Government
High School Internship Program
Jane Gucciardo, Program Advisor

About Us

Ms. Cormier taught American Government at HB Plant High School until she joined the Hillsborough County Property Appraiser’s office on January 8, 2013. As a promise to her former students, she started this internship program as a way to connect young men and women interested in public service to careers in local government. Ms. Cormier found a similar program in Shelby County, Ohio and contacted its Program Director, Shawn McElroy. Mr. McElroy provided the initial material to get the program started in Hillsborough County and Ms. Cormier and her volunteer, Jane Gucciardo, went to as many high schools as they could to deliver information and applications. In May 2013, four students were selected and the program began it’s inaugural year on June 19, 2013.
Jane Gucciardo served as an educator in the Hillsborough County School System for 38 years. Prior to her retirement she taught social studies and served as the Subject Area Leader for science at Martinez Middle School. Since retiring she continues to serve within her community as a volunteer. Jane helped a great deal in developing the Hillsborough County Local Government High School Internship Program by developing the program itinerary and in selecting the applicants.
